Want to transform a plain fence or trellis into a stunning tropical display? Flowering vines are one of the fastest ways to add color, privacy, and wow-factor to a Tampa Bay yard. Here are our top picks available for local delivery.
1. Mandevilla (Mandevilla spp.)
Mandevilla is one of the most spectacular tropical vines you can grow in Tampa Bay. Its large, trumpet-shaped blooms come in bold shades of pink, red, and white and appear almost continuously from spring through fall. It grows vigorously on trellises, fences, arbors, and pergolas, and thrives in Tampa Bay's heat and humidity.
- Sun: Full sun
- Water: Moderate — water regularly but allow to dry slightly between waterings
- Growth rate: Fast — can reach 10-20 feet in a season
- Best for: Trellises, fences, arbors, containers with a stake
2. Dipladenia (Mandevilla sanderi)
Dipladenia is Mandevilla's more compact cousin — perfect for smaller spaces, containers, and hanging baskets. It produces the same gorgeous trumpet-shaped blooms but with a bushier, more controlled growth habit. Ideal for Tampa Bay patios, entryways, and smaller trellises.
- Sun: Full sun to part shade
- Water: Moderate — drought-tolerant once established
- Growth rate: Moderate — stays more compact than Mandevilla
- Best for: Containers, hanging baskets, small trellises, patios
Tips for Growing Vines in Tampa Bay
- Provide sturdy support: Fast-growing vines like Mandevilla need a strong trellis or fence to climb
- Fertilize regularly: Feed with a bloom-boosting fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season for maximum flowers
- Prune in late winter: Cut back hard in February before new growth begins to keep vines tidy and encourage fresh blooms
- Watch for frost: Both Mandevilla and Dipladenia are frost-sensitive — bring containers indoors or cover in-ground plants if temperatures drop below 40°F
